National Elevation Dataset
Spatial metadata in the form of an ESRI shapefile is supplied for each resolution layer and may be obtained at this NED Metadata download page. Polygonal footprints of the contributing area of each source dataset provides spatial context, with various attached attributes describing the source data's characteristics, such as its original resolution and production method. A NED user might, for example, use this metadata to identify portions of a study area that were produced with now-obsolete methods. A list and description of these attributes can be found in the NED Data Dictionary document.

- 5 meter DEM (Alaska Only) The spatial metadata for the 5-meter DEM (Alaska Only) is contained in the DEM source spatial metadata shapefile (FESM_OPR). To locate the 5-meter DEM in the spatial metadata, build an attribute query first using the attribute field pmethod to select all records with the numeric value of 10, and then query the results using the attribute field proj_name to select all records with text that starts with AK_IFSAR (all Alaska ifsar projects start with AK_IFSAR).
Source Datasets - Lidar, DEM
- Lidar Point Cloud
- DEM Source DEM source contains lidar-derived DEMs in the original projection and horizontal resolution in which they were delivered to the USGS. These DEMs are packaged and delivered by project. Horizontal resolution, coordinate systems, and data volume may vary from project to project.
